Patrick swore long and hard. With an angry glance at the speeding fine lying on the passenger seat beside him, he swore again. He’d not had a speeding fine since he was a teenager. Well, it served him right. There was no point screaming down the highway and getting himself killed, he’d not see Fleur any faster doing it that way.
He snapped off the radio. The blathering DJ irritated him. What a week. What a bloody god-awful week. Surely nothing more could go wrong. Problems, major problems at the new restaurant threatened his sanity, especially when he was trying so hard to keep it together, to stay cool.
And to top it all off, after a stressful meeting with a brain-dead builder, who he’d like to punch into next week, he had been about to read his messages when he dropped his mobile and it smashed to smithereens. Never in the history of mobiles had a mobile phone shattered into as many pieces as this one did. Even if he’d hit it with a hammer he couldn’t have disintegrated it as well as what that small drop had done. Bizarre.
Hence his speeding to Whitby to see her. Hence his disgust at being pulled over by a policeman with an attitude. Of course he knew speeding was dangerous and of course he knew speeding in the rain was suicidal. But Fleur had left messages—messages he couldn’t answer.
